Resolved Question

How is accupunture different than self-mutilation?

Aside from the obvious, i.e. scars. I mean, isn't stabbing one's self with needles the same as, say, slashing one's self with a razor blade? For that matter, how about the former popularity of bloodletting?

Okay, I'll admit that I was being a smartass when I asked this question.

yes! I also think tweezing one's eyebrows should be considered self mutilation as well

self mutilation is self mutilation,
mutilation done by yourself,
Someone else does accupuncture and its very effective with no side effects or risks whatsoever

Someone does acupuncture to you.

Self mutilation is just that, done by self.
The purpose of aucpuncture is medical in nature.
Self mutilation has no basis in medical science.

acupuncture is to release muscle tension and stress...its not self mutilation. it is usually done by a professional.

It depends on the purpose of why you would do either one

I think acupuncture is for relieving physical pain instead of causing pain (to relieve painful emotions).
Bloodletting or cutting is also about causing physical pain to relieve emotional pain... which I can see as self-mutilation. It's sad that some people feel the need to harm themselves.

From what I understand, acupuncture follows the ancient Chinese idea that the body contains vein-like flows of energy (think of it like an energy-based circulatory system), and blockages or imbalances in these flows are the causes of various ailments. Placing needles in specific parts of the body is thought to "fix" the flow in those parts, and therefore relieve the ailment.

As for scars, I think the needles are small enough that nothing will be left behind. However, I've never undergone acupuncture, so I could be wrong.
