You should try and face it or it will always be there. My son had a small accident last year and fell off an inflatable into the water while we were on holiday. I was right there to catch him but the experience still freaked him out. We have been gradually building his confidence back and in august are returning to the pool where it happened and I hope to make the experience so positive he forgets the old accident. It was hard for him at first going back in a pool he cryed and screamed but we sat in the shallows and I gave him lots of comfort and reassurance. We went to a water park last week at first he was nervous but by the end he was loving it and was so good to see him getting soaked by waterfalls and tipping buckets and laughing. We have built him up in baby steps I would guess it would work the same with and adult.
