How many of you have given a stranger off the street some food to eat or some money when they were down on their luck?

Yeah, all the time..I'm not stupid,I know that in a lot of cases it'll go on drink or drugs..but having been homeless myself,I know how much of a blessing a few hours or a night not thinking about the hopelessness of such an existence is..Telling someone with no address,no bank account and no access to clean clothes or a means to bathe to"go get a job" is probably the most ridiculous statement possible..

I think what we need is more halfway houses with 'tough love' and true mentors..those who really want out of their downward cycle will turn up for their unpaid community work and build up things to put on their resume while collecting their unemployment cheques, those who're just after a place to crash while they carry on putting in no effort will be put back out on the streets...Just an idea..Like (1)

I used to work downtown where a lot of the homeless found shelter in the skyways during the colder winter months. My co-worker (whom I car-pooled with) and I had kind of an attitude about being asked for money every 12 steps by strangers. Then one day I was walking along and didn't realize my purse was open and I was dropping money like Gretle leaving a trail of bread crumbs... A rather scary looking guy whose skin was permanently grey from inclement weather and lack of personal hygiene raced after me picking up all the bills and coins and handed it all to me. He wouldn't accept anything in return, no matter how hard I tried. An hour later, I went back with a cup of coffee and a croissant, found him and gave it to him. He still wouldn't take money, but after that, I made a point of offering coffee to someone in need from time to time as we walked through the skyways.

I gave a guy in a coffee line $5. He immediately ordered a sandwich and coffee, then wolfed it down. Would have given him more if I was able.

I used to teach kids we grabbed out of jail and off the street and paid to take a program of counseling and education. I've been a soft touch ever since...

The ones who didn't didn't last, but we actually had a more than 90% success rate after 3 years (the measure was whether the kids in question were well housed and legitimately employed 3 years later)Like (1)

Many times. Once I walked downtown past a couple older gentlemen who sat on the back steps of a business. They greeted me kindly, and when I returned the greeting, they asked if I could spare any money. I gave them $5. After running my errand, I came back the same street, and one of those gentlemen hollered thank you to me. I turned to see him leaving a small store with something to eat. I almost cried.

Many times and plan to as long as I'm able. Who knows, it might be me in that circumstance someday.

I have. But one time I gave a bag of hot, fresh burgers to a guy standing by the interstate on-ramp with a cardboard sign that said HUNGRY, and in the rear-view I saw him toss the hot meal in the nasty, polluted drainage ditch. He was actually well fed, and just wanted cash. many beggars are professionals, people just too damn lazy to work. **** on those, I say. mainly because they give the truly needy unwarranted bad press.

I have offered two different people some food I had left over from nice restaurants -- neither one wanted the food, and one swore at me, because he wanted money. Never more!

Very logical response, Mr. Omen. However, I do recall (because I repeatedly see the same guy with the same sign) that one of the men's signs said Hungry -- Please Help. So much for that guy.Like (1)

Often. I feel just a little guilty when I leave Starbucks with my $5 coffee and see someone who needs to eat.

I have. But now I realize that all I was doing was feeding their drug addiction and enabling them to stay a street person. Tough love is what is required here.

I don't know how many, but I have. Now, how many people who I've given money to have used that money for something other than food?

Hopefully. I don't like the idea of giving to those who misuse instead of giving to those who were sincere. But, I still give. During a hard time in my life, it was a homeless guy who helped me out by showing me the places I could get food and help if I ever needed it. I thought his way of helping people was much more efficient.Like (1)
