If the apartment is in Baghdad it really doesn't matter. George Bush has seen to it that all ages are equally unsafe.

I'd say it depends on the area. Sixteen maybe.

If you consider that playing outside unsupervised is the same as being without a baby sitter then use the applicable state law. in most states kids have to be anywhere from 11 to 13 to be left alone.

Depends on:
Are they in group?
What's the neighborhood like?
Access to highways etc.?
Is the playground visible from a number of apartments? Perverts like playgrounds that arent under direct obseravtion.
Finally-talk to other parenst ans set up a playground watch schedule so kids can play whil one parent is always there.

Depending on the area, I think 10 or 11, and a thier parent you still need to keep an eye on them every so often, also if the apartment is by the highway, then I think a little older, and even at 16, 10, or 11,we should always keep checking on them and having them report in once in a blue to thier parents.

Depending on the floor, if your on the first You could always keep an eye on them through the window without hovering. If they are prone to wandering off with friends, you should wait until they are a little older.

Even in a private backyard you have to ask yourself if the area is safe and if you trust and know your neighbors. There are websites where you can search to see if there are pedophiles or ex-cons in your neighborhood. If I were you, I'd check out such sites and put in your address. In my case, I didn't completely want my kids out of my sight until they were 10 or 12....too much can happen too quickly and as far as I'm concerned, you can never be too careful.

I think within the apartment complex, the appropriate age would be 8-9.However outside the apartment complex, the appropriate age would be the 10-11.

Honestly, I think it depends on what kind of neighborhood you live in, what kind of neighbors you have, & whether you can still see your child from inside your house. If it's a bad or so-so neighborhood, definitely wait til their like 14 at the absolute youngest, & that's only if you can see what they're doing. All kind of things can happen to kids, even in a good neighborhood, so it's best to be cautious.
