7 - my cousin died of a brain tumor... I was more in shock than anything.. I saw everyone crying and I could not get a tear out... I actually tried to force myself to cry -- I looked like such an idiot I'm sure.

My experience is almost exactly yours...
My grandma died when I was four, but I didn't go to that funeral...
A year later, my papa died, I went to that funeral and have never been the same...

I was 2 or 3 when my grandpa on my dad's side died. I never really got to know him. I don't remember anything about it except being in the little room where the family meets....so it wasn't the actual funeral itself.
Going a little older, I was about 5 when a lady from my church passed away. I wasn't that close to her.
When my pastor died not long after, that had more of an impact; yet, at such a young age, I had an aversion to funeral homes already and would not look as we all walked by the casket for last goodbyes.
Really, the one that impacted me the most and the earliest was one that I did not go to. I was in 5th grade. It was my other grandpa's funeral; I was really close to him. I still had such an aversion to funeral homes, that I went to the family gatherings there before the funeral, but instead of going to the actual funeral, I volunteered to help look after my younger cousins at my grandparents' house. For years, I felt bad about that. I heard the whole funeral and burial was very touching. I still miss my grandpa when I think about him.

I was in 6th grade when my next door neighbor died. I went to view the body. It creeped me out for along time.

I was about 6 years old. my little boyfriend's father had just died in a construction accident. I vividly remember riding in the car through the city and looking at the row houses on the way to the funeral. I also remember my bf laughing during the funeral. Someow I knew he just didn't understand the reality of the situation. On the other hand his father used to beat him with his belt with little reason.
