I have been trying to make 6am my habit... it's not quite a 'habit' yet.. First thing I do is go for a run that wakes me up so I've got that to look forward to each morning

Use an alarm clock. Also, go to bed at the same time each night. going to bed at different times throws off your body's internal clock. Please be aware that it may take 2 to 3 months for your body to become accustomed to this schedule and if you mess it up once or twice in a row, you will revert back to your old wake-up time. It took me 4 years, but i now wake up at 3:15 am on work days and 5:30 am on my days off - with no alarm clock.
