you can't, i fit this category. i lie because of past experiences and pain. I now know i need to go to therapy to overcome this. If that person doesn't know or want that then there is nothing (in my opinion
) you can do to help them

I face this daily with a young teenager that I know. It's lies about things that exist and things that are not even real. I mean she makes things up sometimes to compete with another person, sometimes to sound exciting and for other reasons too. The good thing is that I know her very well and I can usually see through the lies 99% of the time. I don't know how because she completely fools everyone else. The way I finally began to stop her from telling ME lies is this, when I know she's lying I just say, "stop talking". Believe it or not she seems very relieved to be able to stop and just let it go. She will literally stop at that moment and after a few moments of silence she starts to talk again about something else that is true. She just has to be notified by me every time I know a lie has been told. It's not humiliation that is at play because I don't aim for that nor does she feel that way but rather it's a respect for me knowing and alerting her that I know.

You need professional help to see why you need to lie to fill something missing- it is usually caused by trauma
