I held mine on the opposite side of my injury. Not sure if that is correct, but it helped me tremendously after knee surgery.
The cane/walking stick is suppose to be used on the opposite side of the body than the hurt leg (like a third leg that moves in sequence with the hurt leg). So if your left leg is hurt then hold the walking stick in your right hand. Sorry to say, if you foot is too bad, you may need a set of crutches.
