    it would be a relief to stop explaining why i don't feel "proud" of the meaningless random fact of where i happened to be born.

    It wouldn't. I would be identified differently by others, but I would still identify as... me!

    My life would be different but my identity would not. While I am aware of being a citizen of my country, that is merely an acknowledgement of whom I allow to tax me (which is really all that nationalism ever boils down to). I am me, and remain so regardless of who I allow to tax me.
