They're the opposite of each other....The first means that you don't care at all whilst the second means that you do still care to some degree.

British = 'I couldn't care less'
American = 'I could care less'

Clearly, the American version is not quite so scathing or to the point.

"Couldn't care less", means you are disinterested in what is happening, you don't have the strength or energy to put anymore care into the situation.

I would suppose to say you "Couldn't care less", would mean you wouldn't care less less if you could. ??

It's one of those terms that confuses on purpose I think, you say it when you don't want to commit to a solid point of view.

My pet peeve was the statement, "Nothing is beyond you." It just seems to me that if nothing is beyond you then what do you have to look forward to? Everyone seems to take that statement as meaning something great and positive is going to happen in your future. How do they get that from it???

Couldn't care less is stating that you really could NOT care any less about a situation. I could care less, advises that I in fact am able to care even less than I do. So it really depends which point you are trying to make.

I've always used 'I couldn't care less' meaning I'm at the extreme point of not caring.

Couldn't means you don't care, can't care any less than you already do.

Could means that tho' the person cares they could, care less.

Informally, I see both phrases as meaning the same thing, and I would (and probably do) use them interchangeably.
