((hug)) Sorry. I understand. I have been there.

The first steps are usually to accept where you are at, and to be kind to yourself. Give yourself the same compassion you would give a friend. Give yourself the same advice you would give a friend. Support yourself the same way you would support a friend.

If you need help with the depression or dieting, see a professional or start reading good books on the subjects.

It takes time, and there will be set backs. Extend to yourself the same love and patience you would extend to a friend.

    Good luck.

just think to yourself, eating won't make me feel happier in the long run. it'll probably make me feel worse. first up, maybe try to tackle why you're upset? see a counselor if possible, and if you can't do that, talk to a friend. try to get to the bottom of it. and it might help you to join weight watchers to keep you on track, if you visit that once or twice a week. also, maybe try to get a dieting partner? and just try to be happier, because once you're happier, then you'll know that that is when you're mentally ready to stop eating too much. good luck :)

For years I tried to diet and diet just to find myself on your same situation. I would eat because I was sad, bored, or because I got on the scale and now I gain a pound so what was the point let's go have some ice cream I'm never going to loose any way. Everything I just described was nothing but a secondary issue for me, but I didn't know it. Doctors will told me that I was depress and gave me antidepressants just to find out decades later that my problem was ADHD and not depression or an eating disorder.

Now that I am been treated, I'm able to follow a healthy diet, the weight is coming off and I'm starting to be happier. So like WhoExistswithoutaName said "Find the real source of your problem and solve it" it may not be the eating or even the depression.
