    Not any more.

I used to, but having to work in quite a few different cultures sure wrung that out of me quickly. Yep, it's different; the way of doing things is different, you may not understand what is going on at first. But I found three things to be important.

Street Smarts - Knowing what to look for in your surroundings and behaving like you belong. Growing up in the inner city I had to learn this, so I know where I shouldn't be and when to back out of some place. There were places in Mexico City that scared me. For chrissakes, you can be a tourist, and even look like one, but be aware of yourself and your surroundings. Act local.

Like the Food - Cultures love their food. If you do too then suspicion melts away. The first thing I do when landing in a new culture is to check out the markets and the street life. There is nothing better than to eat at the night markets in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. And you get to check out how the food is prepared. European cafe life is the best for chilling out.

Learn a few phrases - At least learn how to say ?Donde esta el bano? in the culture you are in. That'll keep you from ******* in some alley. Know how to greet people and thank them. I've gotten plenty of complementary drinks in Eastern Europe from bartenders just because they saw that I was enjoying the niceties of their culture.

And. Be bold. (I wish I was as bold in social and romantic interaction as I am about traveling, but, ah, that's another story).

Americans are poor travelers. One reason is our lack of vacation. So here's my final answer about finding other cultures scary - GET OFF YOUR DAMNED BUTTS AND AGITATE FOR DECENT VACATIONS LIKE NORMAL FIRST-WORLD NATIONS HAVE - **** IT, **** THE EMPLOYERS THAT TREAT YOU LIKE CHATTEL, **** THE POLITICIANS THAT SAY THE "JOB CREATORS" DON'T LIKE IT WHEN YOU TAKE VACATIONS, **** THE ******** THAT TELL YOU TO KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE GRINDSTONE. Then travel.
