I have always wondered how art is marked... I felt quite dissatisfied when I got a B art GCSE?

Surely Everything is art so how on earth do they mark it?
When I went on an art trip back in school I remember My art teacher getting so truly excited about a brick wall and even more so a completely blue canvas! (apparently It had lots of emotion it and was truly magnificent) and I though it was a load of crap. Im not sure how you could call something like that art..
so when I took my exams I thought A* here I come, I thought it would be a complete doddle.. seeing as my art was actually pretty decent and not some crappy canvas painted entirely blue...
shouldn't every art student be an A* student if everything is considered art..
I repeat how do they go about marking art?... and I think its unfair a brick wall induces more excitement then my wonderful pictures...

(also was well pissed off with her when she made me ruin my painting she made me draw a house in the middle of a wave.. and on another piece literally picked up the brush and started adding random color! she's nuts)

thats a good question. Perhaps they have some sort of criteria they have to follow in order to grade it.

I would think that a young Picaso might not have done so good in art school, hehe ;p

When I studied Art, I remember an assignment given with very little explanation . It was simply "Life" create a sculpture. use variety of media and show at least 50hours work in your art journal.

I did a mind map in my journal, then mind mapped the mind map, sketched a few thumbnails, and the day before it was due, I was still scratching my head.

I was in a recycle shop when inspiration dawned.
I bought an ironing board, iron.some clothes,a teapot, wooden spoon, saucepan, baby doll, babydoll pusher, some diapers etc.... with glue gun..attached it all to the ironing board, painted it all over in whith ceiling paint and called it "The Altar of Life of Motherhood"

I got a High Distinction...go figure !

moooo's got it.

you should discuss this grade with your teacher. i've found the most flexible professors grade wise are art and philosophy professors. if you can explain why you think your work deserved an "a" they may just change it...

Art isn't based on skill and what looks good, its marked on how well it conveys its message. A brick in the wall is very symbolic, and although little skill has gone into placing it in a wall, the subjective magnitude of it is huge!
So at school the planning and documentation of your artwork is pivotal to your grade. Poor explaination and planning leads to a poor grade. And if there's no subjective or emotive meaning behind it, there's no body to the artwork :)
