I have an illnes that is not visible or contagious. My boss disclosed this information. What to do ?

I have rheumatoid arthritis. I am in a lot of pain and am very fatigued, but this past week I missed a few days work for the first time in over a year. My boss told people who had no need or right to know about the disease and the treatment I was having. I get along with her very well ordinarily, but now I feel betrayed. I have my own reasons for not wanting people to know - right or wrong. I don't want well meaning people asking me how I feel all the time. I just like to keep my mind off it as much as possible when I'm at work. Now I will also have to listen to all the well meaning helps and cures people will tell me about. Everyone always knows about a pill, a cream or a diet that will cure this auto immune disease. They also think I need to hear about Uncle Bob who had no legs and perservered. I am well aware that lots of people are worse off than me and I am not sitting on a pity pot. I have an excellent support system and do not want to talk to anyone at work about this

You can sue that person for giving out your personal information especially your medical condition. That is against the law. I also have Rheumatoid arthritis and I want to tell you that I am impressed that you are still working. My pain is worse cause I don't take medicines. When the ad said "can cause death" I knew that I would never risk my life to handle the pain. It's not worth it. But anyway like I said seek legal ramifications against your employer. It is a VIOLATION of trust and disclosure.

I agree with Lacsar, Sue, she had no right to tell others what you're going through. You have been betrayed.

She may have meant well but it was definitely wrong to discuss your health issues with co-workers. I understand how you feel, I like to keep all my personal life separate from work. If you want to pursue it, you probably do have legal rights here.

If your company has an HR office, go to them and lodge a complaint. If this does not satisfy you, threaten them with a law suit. If this does not satisfy you, sue.

I can understand why you are angry. Anyone would be. You life and illness are your business. Firstly i would advise you talk to a senior manager about what has happened at work. That your illness has been plastered across the office so to speak. You should demand an apology from both senior management and the person who created the problem and if they don't seem bothered about the upset that has been caused to you, seek legal advise. Good luck with that x

Been there. Had a boss disclose my pay rate to everyone. After I had two miscarriages, and found I was expecting, asked my husband not to tell anyone. He did, I lost the baby, and it was worse hearing how sorry eveyone was. I Have cut myself off from most folks. Life is just too short to play the game of I am better than you because ( bigger car, house, better clothes, etc.) I have found that getting in touch with spirituality helps.

well, how much do you like having a job? Seriously, you can go do all the above, HR, lawyers, etc. but I bet if they don't let you go now, they will later and 'with cause' that has nothing to do with your health. And do you think you'll easily find another?

I'd say its David and Goliath, but its not, Its more like Derek and Goliath, but you never hear about Derek because he was an anonymous average Joe and because Goliath crushed his head like a grape in battle.

Ask your boss why she disclosed personal information regarding your health. Take a witness with you and be respectful. If the answer is unsatisfactory, or you believe the disclosure was done intentionally to harm you, first contact your union (if you are represented) and have them provide you legal counsel. If you're not represented, contact the bar association and explain what happened. You will recieve the names of three lawyers experienced in labor law and have 1/2 hour or so of (usually) free consultation.
