I have two theories on music and below, I'm putting them both up for argument. So argue away. :)
1. Had he lived to a ripe old age, Hank Williams would've been considered possibly the top songwriter of all time. As it was, he died at age 29 and look what he wrote and sang. He had 35 songs in the country top 10 and his skills were still developing. I heard someone say that they saw him write the classic "Kaw-liga." Said he was in a cafe and wrote it on a napkin in the time it took him to eat.
2. Had he lived to a ripe old age, Jimi Hendrix would've reinvented music as we know it. His skills with a guitar were amazing for that era and he wanted to learn more and more. His talent was boundless.
3. Okay, I said two but here's one that binds them together. Both Hank and Jimi would be appalled by a lot of what is passing for music these days.
Argue away!

I like the sentiment about the classical musicians, and if I may expound further, applying this thought to all men/women in all of the history of all of the arts, sciences, and applications of the legacy of human experience... It is perhaps not enough to ask why, how, when, what if... but more so, who. The total sum of the gift and the contribution is the lesson which inspires those that follow.

This is easy... it all depends on your generation you grew up in. Both artists were true to themselves in their own way. I did like jimi better but I'm kicking Hank Williams.
There was time 10 years ago that music went down hill but today I think it's alive and well.
Answer: You cant't Compare!

Hank Williams was,and is probably one of the most influential songwriters of all time.In his short life,he wrote not only hit songs, but standards, which in my oppinion are even more important.Hits come and go,but standards are the songs that may not nescesarily chart well, but stand the test of time, and most people recognize these songs instantly.Hank Williams influence has reached beyond country music, and touched so many artists in so many genres of music.I don't believe any artist has done more for popular music.
Jimi? Let's face it,he changed the way we looked at,listened to,and played the guitar forever.I think however, that eventually he would have exhausted his musical genius, and when the well went dry,and he could no longer draw from it,he would have died from thirst...thirst for innovation.
I don't think either of these men, along with a few others that I can think of,would have fared well in this day in age.I don't even know if I trust today's society to even accept individuals like Hank and Jimi. There are many "artists" going through the motions, playing the role of the tortured genius, but how many of them actually are?I really don't know.I do believe though, that if anything good came from the untimely deaths of these legendary artists, and I don't mean to sound so cold, but it might just be that they never had to suffer the indignity of touring on the golden oldies cicuit like so many of their peers do today, but then again,Jimi would probably have disappeared into a seclusion of blues bars and beer joints somewhere, under a made up name, like blind willie somethin',and Hank? Well,he probably would have just drank himself to death eventually.:)

I do not know about Hank Williams. But he is legendary.
And I do not like Jimmy Hendricks.
Most dead musicians are legendary because they had some talent and some hits and then they died. The majority died from overdoses-tortured artists and addictions seem to run hand in hand. Some died in accidents like Ricky Valance and Buddy Holly. They had talent. And Jim Croce would have been a living legend had he not died. I love music. It transforms. It lifts my spirits. Makes me sing and dance. Thank you for this question.xoxo

not much of a theory....
...both were products of their time and bound by the possibilities of that time...
...now consider this: what if bach or beethoven had access to 21st century tools... they were both masters of their time, pushing the boudaries and limits of musical possibilities that were available in their era....
what kind of music would they be creating in the 21st century? my guess would be Trance...

Can't turn back time. Who knows what would have happened, the fact they died so young full of promise has kept their music alive. Plenty of great artist go on for too long performing and sure people will have an opinion on who they are.

most popular music is overrated , but people don't have tons of time to search for music. I also think hating popular music for the sake of not liking it, is as dumb as just liking popular music.
