I just bought a paper shredder for my home since identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the U. S. and now I can-

shred any mail with my personal information on it and thwart dumpster divers .
My question is this . Is there any reason why a small personal home paper shredder would not be able to shred papers with staples still in them ? It's such a pain to pull out every staple in a stack of paper before shredding it all.

Go get yourself a staple remover, otherwise your machine will break very fast, and the blades will stuff up!

Just buy a staple remover, since you already bought the cheap paper shredder. It cost about 3.99 and it takes the staples out easily.

just tear that corner off before shredding them. or just throw the papers in the same bin as kitty litter, diapers, snotty tissues and hygiene products. if they want my identity they'll have to work for it

I've never had much luck with home shredders, I tend to abuse them, I don't think staples hurt them but I often put a few more sheets than recommended then it doesn't go through properly and jams up. I have had 3 shredders and need to buy number 4, must remember to be kind to it but in all honesty cant expect a $25 shredder to do the same job as a professional type used in the office.

yes, because small personal ones will jam up it it hits a staple. Big industrial ones gobble them up along with paper clips. Either way, rarely is someones identity stolen from your garbage can. Its through corporations that you give your info to, is leaked and sold.

They won't go through the machine and will make it jam. I splashed out and got a laser-flash-incinerator to dispose of my secret documents. Some people will take the time to tape those shredded strips back into complete documents and my machine only leaves a fine powdery ash.

I believe a crosscut shredder will cut up paper so it can't be reassembled .

It certainly makes it more difficult but a good scanner and pattern recognition program can scan and resemble the document in a few seconds.

I think most of them these days do--but check the box/paperwork. If it can't do staples, there should be a warning on it someplace.

It will tell you on the instruction manual. If it's too small for a manual then i doubt it will take the staples. I did wonder if it would shred cat's tails. Mine has a habit of sitting on top of it.....

The-instruction booklet that came with it says no staples . I e-mailed the company and they said it's OK to shred staples . I hope you don't find out the hard way with your cats tail !!!
