Just get over your shyness and start a conversation with him. Make a comment about the place or the work there and ask him what he thinks. It's not that hard. Just open with some neutral subject like that.

Hmm...I'm a part time teacher there, I only come twice a week, & it's only like an hour. I come, then teach, so I rarely speak to him. But, if I'm in the teacher's room, he always takes a glance at me. The funniest thing is he doesn't know that I know he's looking at me. It happens all the time, even only twice a week and couple minutes.
