Welcome to real life... I left my nineteen alone to fiend for his self once and came home to a freezer of McDoulbles. His grocery shopping and cooking expense accounted for.
I told him if I wasn't around anymore how are you going to survive?
Google some good advice on Dave Ramsey Show and listen. I was debt free before I found him but he does make sense if you really are serious about being financially responsible for yourself.Like (1)

Determine your income. Determine your expenses. Then prioritize the rest. Usually when a pay check comes in, you pay yourself first. (A percentage should go into savings, any amount you can afford. Even 10$. You can have this automatically pulled once a month/week etc if you set it up with the bank.) Then bills are paid. You've now set a budge.
To stick to a budget, Other tips include:
-leave your credit cards/debit cards at home and work with cash. Its easier to track.
-cut your habit. Whether its alcohol, cigarettes or daily latte's. You can do without when money is this tight
-save all your receipts in order to help you stick to that budget. Receipts assist you in being accountable, and your budget trackable
-analyze your spending regularly. Take note of things that can be cut, where your over spending, unnecessary spending
