Both. You have acquired a pattern of familiarity from the process of pulling out a pack, removing a cigarette, putting it your lips, lighting it, pulling a drag from it, etc. That process over and over has become the psychological pattern of addiction. The physical is the craving of nicotine.

More likely psychological plus peer pressure

When you smoke you KNOW you're addicted. You don't FEEL it until you decide to quit. Smoking dulls your senses overall. When I stopped I was amazed that I became much more aware of COLOR in my surroundings, the taste and TEXTURE of food that I was eating and the richness of music that I listened to and nuances in the voice and lyrics that I had never noticed before. It only lasted while my brain and body were adjusting to nicotine withdrawal which was not easy. The cravings diminish over time but for YEARS I was afraid that I would pick one up on impulse without thinking and all that hard work would be lost. I did it 'cold turkey' (what an expression, that is just how you feel). I'm glad I did. Now I know it is possible. For a long time I was not sure I could do it.

Just because it's all in your head doesn't mean it's psychological!

I would rather die than quit smoking.

BOTH ! Nicotine is the most powerful addiction that there is.
I have known drug addicts that could not give up smoking yet they quit all other drugs.
I used to smoke and tried everything and nothing worked until I tried Chantix.
It really did the job for me and two other family members too.

Well of course you didn't feel addicted when you were smoking, because you were satiating your need for cigarettes. But when you don't, your addiction kicks in and makes you want them, need them, because of the nicotine and acetaldehyde in cigarettes.

Both. Your hooked on the nicotine and your used to smoking so you miss it. Try chewing gum or sucking a pen or something :-)
