I see the word "bloody" here on EP and I'm curious as to what it actually means,i.e.,"I can't get the bloody thing to.."
I know it's been used in England for quite some time and I have heard it before in the States, but not so much in that context. Does anyone know how the term originated? How often do you use the term?

Bloody - One of the most useful swear words in English. Mostly used as an exclamation of surprise i.e. "bloody hell" or "bloody nora". Something may be "bloody marvellous" or "bloody awful". It is also used to emphasise almost anything, "you're bloody mad", "not bloody likely" and can also be used in the middle of other words to emphasise them. E.g. "Abso-bloody-lutely"! Americans should avoid saying "bloody" as they sound silly.

It means that the thing that is "bloody" is being most obtuse and un-co-operative.
e.g. "The bloody obtusive and non-compliant thing , refuses to bend to my will".

"Bloody" was a taboo word of religious origin (The Blood of Christ) which has lost its religious connotation and is now just an all-purpose curse.

The word "Bloody" stands in his own right as a legitimate word; blood is something that you see from a wound when the skin breaks (which we all know) and so it's a sign, or symbol, of acuteness. It becomes slang when we associate it to another word. For instance: To say a cup is "very hot!" sometimes doesn't tell anyone of how it actually is and isn’t expressive enough for some people; what some people do is add the word 'Bloody' and would say: "This cup is bloody hot!" and, to their way of thinking, expresses emphatically just how hot it *really* is.
"Bloody" is used to strongly emphasis a point you are getting across and, some would say, is because a person fails grammatically to express themselves. It can be used in just about every imaginable situation; it isn't a word used only in anger, it's used many times in humour. The word, like any other slang word, is used to emphasis something you feel needs emphasizing; the *need* to use it is (like any other slang word any of us might use) is debatable. :-)
