I signed up to get a credit report from Equifax, but it told me I had to mail in my request. Did that count as my one?

We're allowed to get one free report from each of the big three each year. I filled out the preliminary information to include my SS#, but I wasn't eligible for the online request. They told me where to send my request instead. That didn't count as my one free request did it? I would rather check with the other two and get a report online than mail in.

No. Not sure how you couldn't be eligible for online requests. Go to the FTC.gov site and work it through there.
