The word was originally "pease" and was used as both singular and plural. But since the word ended in an "s" sound, it appeared to be plural, so the singular would be pea and the (new) plural became "peas". There, doesn't sound so bad now, does it? (Answered a question yesterday about the most worthless piece of trivia I know. I could have used this one, but it wasn't completely worthless now, was it?)
