I think being emotional could be beneficial to a social worker, it will help you empathize with people. However, you will also need to be able to compartmentalize things so as to not become too involved.

Thats what I am currently studing! I am a very emotional person, I have lost one of my son's to gang violence and I am now trying to find a way to help others especially children in trouble so I believe that caring loving people like us need to be in a work enviorment where yeah our emotions will be affected by certain circumstances but people really need people like us. Don't you think?
lots of luck to you

Definitely not!! You will be burned out within a month. Do you have any idea of the horrible things social workers have to deal? Have you ever seen or smelled a person with burnt flesh or hair? Imagine a 1-week-old baby burned by an ignorant parent because it would't stop crying. Or an elderly person with bed sores from the neck to the ankles who has been lying her own waste for a month.

In my opinion, to last as a social worker, you need a fire in your belly, a little anger that you can direct at the injustice in the world.

It's no job for cream puffs. Take your tender heart and be a counselor of some kind.

empathy is never bad but you need a stiff upper lip for that kind of work.

Fierychik, I agree whole heartedly with you, but would like to add, that in any kind of social work you have to be unbius(sorry for bad spelling) meaning your emotions should be held in check,,,and emotions can work for you if you know how to use them to your advantege,,, Good luck in what every you do,,,I am emotional as well,,I am going to try and be a consilar for mental patients,,,I belive that I can help them gain some ground in dealing with what they go though everyday of their lives,,,Mary

Social workers need to be caring but level-headed. If that sounds like you, go for it.

I went to college with this degree. Then I turned 30. I no longer have the patience it would require. I have 0 sympathy for the meth heads that are abandoning their small children. I didn't go into the field because of it. I guess I could still go into HR.
