Resolved Question

I want to have an andeventurous lifestyle but I feel like I would regret not having kids. Any thoughts?

I want to travel around, I want to take a million classes, learn things, and meet all kinds of people and have fun in life.
I'm horrible with consistency and routines (essential for a child's well/being).

My thinking tells me I will regret not having kids. Maybe I think this because I'm surrounded by a family-oriented social environment. I feel like if I-m gonna have kids I should settle and the thought gives me the creeps... but yet again... will I regret it? I don't know what to think
My idea of adventure is joining the peace corps and going to Tanzania, it's to race cars, it's to learn martial arts, it's to be spontaneous and NOT have a routine.
Having kids it's not concurrent with my idea of adventure.

Any intelligent comments?

Please for the love of God, unless you want kids don't let anyone talk you into having them.

Whether you have children or not is a big decision. One that only you can make.

This is what I have to say about having children and having an adventurous lifestyle.

While I was growing up, my dad was in the active military service. We moved around quite a bit. It's all I really knew, and I adored it! In fact, now that my parents have "settled down" and bought a house, I miss moving horribly. I would not trade my childhood for anything.

This is my advice if you do decide to have children:

You're right in saying that consistency and routine are important. Sometimes, family traditions were all I had to keep me from going crazy as we moved around the country (and out of country). If you have kids, create traditions based around holidays (for example: always have particular foods at Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).

Do a lot of things as a family. Go on hikes. Play board games or card games. It doesn't matter what you do, do it together! Family is the only consistent thing as you move around, make sure your bonds are strong.

I am 39 years old and childless by choice. My friends kids fill that void on occassion. It really is a personal choice, but I have no regrets. I love just going anywhere on a whim, but I do admire mothers.

You can always adopt or foster later down the road. Older children need people to take them in much more than the world needs more babies.

You can do both. If you have that spirit chances are any child you have will share your love of the world. Once you are a mother, trust me, it comes to you. You can suddenly do things you never thought possible. All the best to you.

Do as much as you can now...If you enjoy it then continue. During that time if you meet someone and decide together that you want kids, go for it. If you want to continue without, that will work, too.

If you think that raising kids is not an adventure, then you are mistaken. luckypickle said it perfectly. The opportunity to have kids is just that - an opportunity. I have traveled around the world and seen six of the eight natural "wonders". However, nothing compares to watching your kid take their first step - nothing. The pleasures we have had raising our kids has been far too many to count. We took them with us on vacations, so you do not have to sit at home all the time. The new things they learn and watching them grow will thrill you as much as seeing anything else on this planet.

Now that our kids are grown, we are traveling again. But we sure do miss those days of long ago and sharing them with our kids.

Its a personal choice. If you enjoy your life the way it is, then don't worry about society's ideas that women must have children to be happy. I know several women (one in her 60's) who do not have children and are happy about it. If ever you do feel the need to fill the void, volunteer your time at a local orphanage or become a foster parent.

how old are you because if you wait a little longer, you can always adopt/foster a child.

I always wondered what kind of an adventurous life I would have had if I hadn't had kids. This is one of those "fork in the road" decisions we all have to make. Either one is an adventure in its own way. I don't regret my choice. But I'm afraid its a choice you will need to think over and make.
