i did some muay thai for about a year. pretty good fighting system, not a martial art. problem is that a lot of unqualified people are teaching it. you really need to do your homework and pick a decent school so you don't get stuck with a charlatan.

I hope you found what you were looking for. I teach Taekwondo (which is spelled with an "o" in "kwon."), and it is a very excellent Martial Art, but like someone else said here about muay thai, there are a lot of unqualified people teaching, so you need to do research and find a good school. Check instructor's teaching and Black Belt credential with a major organization or Kukkiwon in Korea (World Headquarters). Be careful of too much hidden fees, and long term contracts. Meet with students and talk to parents for feedback. Request a trial class before deciding. The school should be pleasant to train at, but not just a 'family fun" hobby, but a legitimate education. School owners can be smooth talkers and sound convincing, but check the internet and Better Business Bureau for complaints. Muay Thai and Kick boxing are specifically designed for sport, but can be adapted for self defense, and make for good exercise. Taekwondo is primarily a Martial Art with a sport aspect of the same name. Unfortunately, the popularity of Taekwondo has created many fraudulent schools, and some legit that lean too far toward sports or "kiddy karate" and neglect the full Martial Art, so compare schools before you join. The cheapest, closest, or most attended is not necessarily the best, but it should not be too expensive.
