One book that helped me is: "How to play guitar" by Roger Evans. Lessons might help too.

Step 1 - Buy a guitar
Step 2 - Get some tabs online
Step 3 - Practice untill you figure it out

That's how I learnt to play bass... I miss my bass :(

Okdoo, hope you don't mind long answers cause I've taught guit for a bit and have some strong opinions on it. Just keep on practising, it's really about keeping the fire there, even when your fingers are flipping EINA from playing.

www.guitarists.net and www.ultimate-guitar.com really helped out in the early days, both have tabs and lessons though ultimate guitar is aimed at a slightly higher level and useful for music theory and a huge tab library. (Music theory isn't evil and can be interesting if you're wanting to write your own stuff eventually. Don't be afraid to use it, just don't rely on it either and become 'book bound') Oh, and learn how to read tabs, very easy, very practical and it opens up a whole world of free music information.

Please DO NOT purchase or even waste your time looking at magic "play like a pro in 48 hours" websites. There are so many and they're very tempting for beginners. In all evidence I don't think they replace good practising as well as cost you a bunch that could've been a better guitar or whatever. Same goes for lessons, if you feel discouraged or bored or you're not an independent (loner with lots of time) driven (fanatic) person and you think lessons will help, go for it. But the beauty of the guitar lies in finding your own feet and style in music, you WILL learn more if you have to figure it out on your own.

I've always found practical work the best way to learn so find a nice, catchy song (beetles, don mclean, johnny cash, gospel if you're so inclined and the other oldies are old favs for new guitarists) and google chords for your favourite songs and try playing them- the best way to memorise chords and get strength in your fingers. It helps when you sound like something and don't play meaningless repetitions. Play along with the CD/MP3?whatever when you get better. It gets a real sense of accomplishment going and you want to play more. Once the More bug has bit and you're over your first bought of sore fingers, best you cancel the social cause you'll want to practise all the time. Or maybe that's just me...

Another useful thing is drills, boring but useful. Stuff like playing 1,2,3,4 on each string helps build co-ords and finger strength-you're going to need it. Scales, again boring but useful, play a few songs before you learn them so that you don't feel bored.

Hope it works out for you, it's a majorly cool instrument. And if for any reason it doesn't work out, please don't let the guitar rot in your attic. Donate it to a music charity, there are tons of places giving disadvantaged kids free lessons but instruments are expensive and they could always use one more.

Love and rythym from Africa. Sioban

I play guitar since only two weeks and now I can play :
the intro of " the beatles yesterday "
the intro of " wanted dead or alive "
nothing else matters of metallica
the intro of "you're beautifull "
I didn't take any lesson , I learned just by following the tabs on the internet and some other websites like :http://fretplay.com/
you'll learn quickly and It's very easy I promis

I think that lessons with a real person are the way to START. Once you have the basics down, you can go ahead with online lessons or books. It'll take a human instructor to help you keep motivated, I think.
