Resolved Question

I was always taught that the Earth orbits the sun,but I have detracters who disagree?

saying that the Earth does not "orbit",but stays in the one position in space,in a line with the sun,and only rotates on its axis.
Who is right???.

The moon orbits around the earth. The earth around the sun, the sun around the center of the Milky Way, and the Milky Way around the center of universe. (finding these 'centers' are more difficult though :P)
That's just mathematically/physically logical...

And as far as scientific evidence goes... Earth is not the center of the Milky Way (nor the Universe).

Another view point: The Sun attracts the Earth as much as the Earth attracts the Sun (measured in Force), but since Earth is so much lighter than the Sun, it must move more than the Sun. [Assuming that we have a closed system of the Earth and Sun... Since if we had 3 Suns of more, those three suns may orbit around Earth: Or more specifically, they orbit around one point, and on that point the Earth could lie... But obviously, that is not the case]

What is more interesting though, is whether or not there are parallel universes :P

If that is true, then why only earth? Throughout time, planets align in certain patterns, so of course they must move then, correct? If the other planets move, then why wouldn't earth? Are any of your detractors astrologists or astronomy buffs? I couldn't see anyone with even a passive interest in either think the earth if fixed one sole position in space.

What a load of malarky! HAHA!

The earth orbits the sun, there is enough evidence to prove that.

Tell who ever says this to watch 'The Universe' series from the History channel. It's an awesome doco series. I'm just watching the third season on DVD at the moment.

Since the Sun is many times more massive than the Earth it's impossible for the Sun to orbit the Earth, rather the vice versa, unless you want to rewrite the Laws of Physics.

Are there really people out there who still think this way?

The earth does rotate on its axis, giving us day and night. It also orbits the sun, giving us seasons because the orbit is not a true circle but more of an oval shape (thus, at times, we are father away or closer).

This is elementary school science, and they need to get a grip.

Hi kowen
Big or massive things attract small things. The Sun is bigger and more massive than The Earth therefore the relationship is as you originally thought. Just agreeing with RobertHedRock really.

Yay!...I am with Jules!

We were taught that...

Do you remember having to use balls to show orbits?
