Is that like fasting only on baked potatoes and steak? Isn't giving something up for Lent supposed to be a religious focal point?

yes, if someone has gotten too attached to doing things (or not doing them) for lent, than giving that up would be a sacrifice (and then they both are and aren't doing lent).
