Resolved Question

I watched Slumdog Millionaire and had to turn it OFF too much violence Anyone else?

By the time I got to the part where the child was having scalding hot liquid poured into her eyeball.....I couldn't take it anymore.

What are your experiences? Is this really entertainment?

How on earth did it win picture of the year?

It's a depiction of reality.

As much as people don't want to face it, this sort of thing *does* happen in the world, and not just in India. There are sick people who exploit children in that way: blinding/injuring them so as to increase their potential as beggars.

I went through a period of reading books by Indian authors - lush, vivid writing styles that presented the beauties and the horrors of Indian life today, so I was somewhat prepared for some of the things that happened in the movie.
I have to admit it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what was going on (flashbacks), but then I was mesmerised. I think it is one of the best films I have ever seen, in terms of content, message and craftsmanship. I think it deserved every award it got or was even nominated for.

The blinding scence was the most vivid one which still stays in my mind. And everyone I talk to mentions that scene as well. I wish you continued and watched the rest of the movie to see what happens to this blind kid, as he is seen one more time...and what happens to all of the children.

It was a story many of us were not ready to digest, especially about India. The media usually projects India as a country of diverse culture and a booming economy and industrialization.

Also, it allows for different perspectives on the religious issues in India...in which the Hindu's massacred a neighboring muslim neighborhood, and later on, one of the muslim characters is seen praying right before he goes on an assassination mission. And the main characters who love each other are Muslim and Hindu, and neither understand their religion or have attachments to their families.

It hits many chords, I'd rent it out and try watching it again.

I read imdb's parental advisory before I watch any movie, because I just can't take violent imagery anymore, even though i'm an adult. I didn't see this movie because it failed my "pre-test".

I couln“t watch that scene but I watched the rest of the movie and I think it is an excellent film: I am glad it won.

Glorified crap by Bruce Willis is much, much worse.

I watched it with kids and almost left theatre.
But my youngest daughter said she was fine - so we stayed.

But if you get past the scene where guys are burning kids's eye - you'll be fine and pleased with the rest.

I don't think it was viloent...I've seen worse.

What I did notice is that the movie itself wasn't as good as everyone made it seem.
