Resolved Question

I went to donate blood about an hour ago and I couldn't because my iron was low?

They recommend you have at least 12.5 iron and I had 10.5. Any sugesstions? Is this serious?

Have some red meat, leafy greens, iron-fortified cereals, and prunes. If it doesn't come up go see the doc.

Serenityprayer is right -- that's what I had to do too because my iron levels were about the same as yours. It's probably not a permanent thing.

10.5 is not serious, add a daily vitamin that has iron.

No, it's not serious. Are you just about to start or just finished your monthly visit from Mother Nature? That can account for it. Also, if you have been out in the hot weather a lot, like gardening or playing baseball, etc. Drinking a lot of caffeine can also zap some of your iron.

I'm a regular blood donor, have been since age 20, and even I occasionally with get rejected because my iron is down a bit. It happened to me 2 weeks ago. Just go home, eat green leafies, cut back on the caffeine, be sure to get your water everyday so you don't dehydrate, and go back in a week and you'll be fine.

If you are female you will notice your iron level change with your monthly cycle.

I had the same thing a few times. Turns out I was anemic. My doc told me to take a multivitamin with iron. After that all was good.

That's not seriously low, however, you need a check up, to figure out why it's low....Anemia is a symptom of many serious diseases....but, it can also just be due to your gender, or diet....I wouldn't take any chances, though...make an appointment....Your doctor knows best.
