Been there, done that, and it is a seriously debilitating illness. I know, I have a 2L VW air cooled engine in my garage waiting to go in the bus tomorrow... Okay, time... You will put a lot of time and love and blood and sweat into rebuilding a Kombi. Years to get it all completed right. You will spend endless hours looking for the exact parts you need (my bus is a 1977, which is 35 years old, so many parts are VERY hard to find). You will learn about sanding, body work, painting, upholstery, seat covering, rebuilding seats, and of course, the inevitable engine rebuilding. Not to mention brakes, clutch, wheel bearings, wiring (35 YO wiring is usually bad), and not the least of your worries, the horn...
And the cost? Well, one new head is $450. And there is no finding a good used head. But can one really price out a labor of love? Well, not if you are a true Kombi fanatic...
Now the REALLY BIG question: a splittie or a Bay Window bus? Oh my, so many decisions. I got a late model (1977) bay window because of the 2.0 Liter engine. And the two different hatches to the engine bay. Love that part. But splitties have their pluses too...
If you get into this, (God bless your soul), then get in touch with me and I can help you find a Kombi that won't make you go crazy from the beginning.
