I would like to know how Americans feel about public broadcasting, whether it be PBS or NPR?

Does it still serve a purpose in the American media?

I listen to public broadcasting. I also support my local public broadcasting stations.

The only radio station worth listening to in Metro -Nyc area is an NPR station WFUV.The amount given by tacxpayers is laufgable. If you think PBS programs like Nature,Frontline ,Mystery, etc have counterparts...well all I see are repeats of insipid sitcoms and reality tv on the "many other channels. Both need massive pledge drives to keep them operating.

Yes, any amount given is a joke. It really should be zero.

I think Big Bird would do just fine without the subsidies.

I think they are over rated. NPR is nothing but a liberal propaganda machine and as such doesn't deserve government funding. As for PBS, I think some is great, but others could pay their own way. If we fund Sesame Street,en the Government should reap the rewards of all the royalties that they make on after market merchandise. We paid the bill to make them famous, we should be repaid for our investment.

these public forms of media are probably the last not completely controlled sources of information that the american public has, but with cable Satalitte, direct tv, etc. there are so many other channels that only a few people are even aware of the situation.

I think it's ridiculous that we should be paying for this stuff. If you listen - pay for it yourself. If you don't want commercials, pay more. I don't have commercials on HBO as I pay my $15 a month - and don't ask you to spend a cent. Return the favor.

Much of what's on NPR and PBS isn't news. What they do pass off as news is actually usually UPI and Rueters wire stories rewritten by the DNC. HBO actually does cover sports and do some amazing documentary work - though much of that has the smell of left wing propaganda. (Anyone but me notice that everytime we get close to an election, that show Mr. Hollands Opus, "W", "The American President," and now that Valerie Plame BS show go into heavy rotation.) They also, of course, have that Bill Maher show that is arguably a news show. Much like the news shows on ABC, NBC and CBS, it also loads up 4 or 5 liberal commentators for every conservative it puts on tv.

You want to know how we feel? Some feels it does serve a purpose, some don't, and some don't care. That's the facts.

I feel that it serves a purpose.

I wouldn't turn on the radio if it wasn't for NPR. I'm with sliderules....I'd fund them a 100% from taxpayer money...and I'd rather borrow money from 'China' for that, than for an invasion of Iran or to send more tanks to Syria

How about we borrow no money for either? (Actually, it's not like China's loaning us much these days anyway. Our own treasure bought the last $1.5 trillion in notes - the Chinese wouldn't touch them.)
