Yes I would buy them something to eat instead. I refuse to support someone's drinking habits.

People need more in life than just food. Judging them and insisting on only helping in one very specific way that they may not need just now, isn't actually *helping*. It's ego-************ in the guise of "helping" others. If you want to help, trust that they are asking for what they need. Otherwise, leave them be.

I usually give them the money, knowing it will probably will not be spent on food. A kind face and a non-judgemental attitude is a rareity for these ppl, and I don't know what kind of life brought him to that place. Probably not a nice one I'm guessing. At least while he's drinking the money he has a pleasant thought to ponder.

No. I trust that a homeless person knows what he or she needs. The homeless in the US are disproportionately comprised of the mentally-ill and veterans. I do not begrudge donating to them.

Yes and have done it before. I never give homeless money because they usually always spend it on drugs. I'd much rather know they are being fed.

I'd just give 'im the money. Although I've bought homeless people food before. If my wife sees a beggar outside of a grocery store she usually comes out with a sandwich.

about 5 years ago, I was waiting at a bus stop and this guy came up to me and told me he hadn't eaten in 3 days. I had an apple in my lunch box left over from lunch, so I offered it to him. He looked at me like I was crazy. "What's that?"
"It's an apple. You said you were hungry," I replied.
"I don't want that," he said nastily and walked away.
That was the last time I responded to any beggars on the street

I gave a homeless couple $20 for some food once. But I kinda got freaked out when they wanted to clean my house. Maybe that was wrong. But, I didn't want them in my house. :(

I have offered before. The homeless person declined. Obviously they didn't really want my money for food.
