Look at taxes, healthcare, food costs, gas prices. Money is more important.

These days a lot of the tobacco is being exported to third world countries and most of the smokers left in the US are poor people. Even the taxes on tobacco in the US don't cover the costs which is why the government keeps raising them. The basic principle of out of sight, out of mind applies. So long as the average person doesn't have to see graphic images of it and it doesn't directly impact their lives they don't care.

Wanna bomb a few thousand women and children living in tin shacks? No problem. Just keep any video off the 6:00 news. Sell DDT to third world countries, not a problem. It's called freedom and capitalism baby and anyone who disagrees is a commie.

People should have the freedom to be as foolish as they wish.
If they wish to poison themselves with cancer-sticks.... then let them.

Some one will fill the demand. And make a hefty sum doing so.

Yes, but what about all the teenagers that do it just to fit in, and can't help themselves?

18 is the legal age that an individual can purchase tobacco products. (USA) no idea about other country's. If by the age of 18, an individual is not capable of making rational decisions for themselves and still "need" to follow the crowd just so they can fit in.. I do hope there is a near by cliff for the lemmings to throw themselves from. Peer Pressure is among one of the many reasons 18 became the legal age for purchase of tobacco. Sorry if you think I'm coming off as harsh. Freedom to choose is my reason for not wishing to ban the sail production and use of tobacco. Give people all the information then let them decide what is good or bad for them. AND let them live with the consequences, don't hold others responsible for someones bad decisions. Most of all do not impede the freedoms of others. I couldn't wait for my 18th birthday so I would have the freedom to make my own decisions. I do not need a nanny state telling me how to live.

The answer to your question is obviously... YES...
If "they" could make money burning babies... (and get away with it) they would...
And I do not say that for a joke...

if they are banned, they'll be like drugs, all the more problems, accept that people will not die gradually.... but instantly, drug war now cigarette war, people killing to protect their illegal cig business... banning will not make it better....

I mean if you were working in that industry, making the best money of your life you might want to keep that job. Greed = Money = power in society. The people who have power will stay on top even if people beneath them are suffering from taxes, cancer or whatever. That's American capitalism in a nutshell.

They will never be banned too much money is raised in taxes from the tobacco industry. A Government that banned them would be signing their premature demise. Sad but true.

The companies make them because people still buy them, they'd rather smoke even given the probability of a shortened lifespan.

The government has been slowly putting more pressure on the cigarette problem. For example, raising taxes on it, putting nasty pictures on the boxes, etc. They can't simply ban it because people would be outraged. Plus, be are so addicted to it, that it has become a part of the livelihood. To take someone off it right away, may be fatal.

It's business. There are tons of things that are very bad for you that are still legal. The government can't regulate everything you do.
