On the desktop size, let's face it: Linux is not winning.
Money is always stronger than honesty and kindness, sadly.
But it's changing: the popularity of Ubuntu, Nvidia support getting real, Steam now on Linux, ... . Let's make this change happen.Like (1)

Linux is everywhere - android phones, Internet servers, and billions of em
bedded devices - think of just about any "smart" device - TVs, fridges, cars, "appliances" like NASs, network attached cameras, medical equipment, etc, etc, etc. Linux powers most of them because it can be used for free ($), with some limitations (it must also be Free, as in freedom). Your real question is: why isn't anyone (that you know) using it on their desktops?
In reality millions of people DO use it on their desktops. However, your question to151rby can't be answered simply - it looks different pretty much everywhere, depending on who implemented it, and how they customized it. Due to the Freedom of Linux, anyone with the technical expertise that wants to change how Linux works - has the legal right to make whatever changes they want, so long as they don't take that right away from anyone they distribute the changes to. What this leads to is the most customizable OS available... Unfortunately, it also leads to a fragmented platform - every vendor does things just a little differently, so there are compatibility problems, user interface issues, etc.
While I love using Linux on servers - it's what I do professionally - I choose to use Windows on all of my desktops. Windows has more customizability than Mac, and has defaults that "just work" (not quite as well as Mac, but without the Mac-style idiotic handholding that gets in the way).
BTW - Mac is /not/ based on Linux, it's ba sed on a near cousin - BSD. If you want to play with Linux, your best bet is to download a copy of Knoppix (http://knoppix.net/get.php) - burn it to a CD in ISO mode (just double-clicking on the file will usually tell your cd burning software to do the right thing). Reboot your computer with the cd in the drive (making sure to use the boot option to boot off of the cd). Knoppix will load a fully functional Linux desktop environment that runs completely from the cd without harming your computer whatsoever. Like (1)

Because Microsoft has successfully pushed away all the competition, even though Linux is a lot better.

Do you mean Fedora? Linux is hardly useful as a GUI and is mostly used for servers.

As far as I know, it is not user friendly. It is meant for computer savvy users.
