At one time the dress codes were written very gender specific. With the advent of the mini skirt, many had to rewrite the dress codes to set a length for the skirt, and at the same time referred to the wearer only by the term "student" as they were now allowing females the opportunity to wear trousers -- something that had been banned for many years. When the dress code still prohibited shorts, many young men in the warmer weather started wearing skirts in protest. The school department stopped worrying about what students wore as long as it was decent. That was back in 1969. Many schools today encourage students to be who they are and not let gender restrict them.

Certainly, if more people wear something in public, then more principals would be likely to allow the same. One big exception would be it the act of wearing something became a disruption for the students and their ability to learn. This applies to any type of clothing though, which is why some schools have resorted to using uniforms. Children at that age will often make fun of anything they perceive as different, even if that same thing is ok to wear in public. For example, a guy can wear a pink shirt while bowling, or playing golf, but a boy in high school would be picked on badly for the exact same thing. I'd much rather see guys wearing skirts, than to see them wearing pants with their waistline sagging halfway down to their knees.

One thing is certain, a boy who wears a skirt anywhere in North America is pretty brave. I have no problem with being seen with them, as I've walked around with guys who were wearing skirts in public with no problems. They got whistled at a few times though!

Umm, no. Hopefully school principals would never promote perpetuating mental illness by doing such a thing.

No, it would seem like some kind of protest at the most, and a fad at the least.

I can only hope not. Yeah, they wore togas, etc in days gone by, but there is a reason it has 'gone by'.
We need to keep it separate between male & female. You say it does not matter?
If that is so, then it is no wonder no one ''knows'' who they are, what they are (as far sexual preference) .

Schools that allowed them would likely have bans put in place.
