Perhaps it is easier to understand when we read it backwards............

"The free things in life are the best"

    This can have two meanings:

That which cannot be truly purchased are best for us really: love, affection, reverence, loyalty, honesty, sincerity, compassion, drive etc

Life is best when minimally constrained. i.e. when we are free to act in accordance with our inner nature, to be authentic (consistent with not interfering with others' freedoms).

Money is usually for the stuff marketed to us as the things which satisfy the needs to belong, be loved, accepted etc. or which will attract the right people to fill the empty real needs.

I guess food and shelter don't rank up there as 'the best things in life'

The best things in life are health, love, nutrition, a safe home, true friendship, happiness, and being able to love and forgive oneself, whenever right or wrong.

Money cannot buy true love! Money may attract people going for money, prestige, luxery. People usually attract people with similar goals, life stories, settings in life.
