If we can put apples in regular salad, why can't we put tomatoes in fruit salad?

After all, apples aren't veggies, but tomatoes are fruit.

Tomatoes aren't fruit... and apples are used in different kinds of salad as are nuts and cheese. A green salad won't have apples just veg, a Greek salad will have yogurt and oil, a Waldorf salad will have walnuts in it. A fruit salad is specifically for fruit, I guess no chef has been brave enough to try and add veg to it for fear of ridicule.

Yes, they are botanically fruit. But for some long-forgotten reason the US government decided to classify them as veggies when they're sold.

I'm pretty sure tomatoes are botanically classified as fruit, though the US government classifies them as veggies for some obscure reason they came up with decades ago.

You can, there are no salad laws forbidding it.
