To ease the loneliness of it, most likely. Human company can be very relieving. Imagine being in terrible circumstances where you COULDN'T do anything -- if you have terminal cancer, or are a teen living in an abusive household -- having the comfort of another human being can make a huge difference.

But I see what you're getting at here. I really wish I had a clear answer to that, because it's something I've struggled with. Expressing our problems can attract the sympathy of others -- so it might be an attention thing. Or it may be about the need to feel important. Or something like that.
