If you found out your Significant other was bulimic...?
What would you do? How would you approach the subject... or would you say nothing at all? How long would you deal with knowing about it if the actions were continuing regardless of your offers/suggestions for assistance (if you offered)

I am no expert, but although Bulimia is categorized and treated as a disease or medical condition, it seems to me that it is really more of a symptom. But a symptom of what? Often it comes from intense feelings of inferiority. Sometimes, it is an endless pursuit of perfection... I think you need to talk with your friend and find out what the motivation here is and then, if possible, try to help them deal with the root cause...

With patience and tolerance. And tough love.

Look at it as any other addiction/drinking/behavior. Suggest help. Offer help. Demand they get help.

Most important is to take care of yourself. A person that lives with or loves an alcoholic needs Al-Anon (or similar help). I would assume that the SO of someone that is bulimic could have the same or similar issues.

Do not pressurise them. Be there for them and understand that this is not a dietary fad but a need for control within their own life- it is akin to crying. Do not ever pressurise them to get better or prevent them from doing what they need to do, as that will make it one hundred times worse for them, show them you know and that you will support them, listen to them, not the media or doctors who acquire their limited knowledge of this out of a textbook. If you need to speak about this, feel free to PM me, i know bulimia well, i am delighted to see a partner of someone wanting to know how to broach the subject and wanting advice as that shows a true desire to understand.
