i would donate at least half of it to the underground railroad, it's an organization that helps domestic violence victims get back on their feet, probably a quarter to the ASPCA, and the other quarter to my church.

Every last cent to go to the United Way, but to be specifically directed to the foundations and organizations that house, feed, and clothe the homeless.

I'd give it Garden Harvest. They grow and distribute fresh fruit and produce for inner city residents who are food insecure. I'd also give to my local animal shelter

Scholarship America whose mission is to mobilize America, through scholarships and educational support, to make postsecondary education possible for all students.
The Children's Aid Society who works to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of children and families, and to provide each child with the support and opportunities needed to become a happy, healthy and productive adult.
The Children's Assessment Center Foundation who provides a safe haven to sexually abused children and their families.
And Finally:
The Colon Cancer Alliance which is the oldest and largest national patient advocacy organization dedicated to ending the suffering caused by colorectal cancer. My grandfather is currently dying of colon cancer.

Most of mine would go to the Epilepsy Foundation, as we are so far behind on research and care for epileptics (I am speaking as one)
The rest would go to the Make A Wish Foundation.

Animal rescues that I know have good reputations, do good work and do not have staff with high salaries. It would be spread out over a several of them but all ones that fight the good fight for animals.

children's charities.. especially the one that help kids who live on the streets and have no place to go. And the one which rescues kids from domestic abuse situations.

I certainly would not give to a church and make the pastor rich. If I had to give the $ away, it would be to help other family members.

Assuming UK equivalent of amount (not necessarily £1M):
Royal National Lifeboat Institution,
Child protection charities like the Nation Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ironically perhaps I have succeeded in my aim never to become a parent).
Any left over; voluntary outdoor-pursuits rescue organisations.

Better I'd book a ticket for Haiti, and distribute resources myself so that not a single buck is wasted.
