I've been alone most of my life- I have better friends online than I do in person. If one creates an imaginary friend they are aware that it is imaginary and disbelieve. If an imaginary friend starts becoming real to the person, this is delusion which is a symptom of mental illness. Mental illness greatly reduces one's chance of making any real social contacts so the imaginary friend is greatly counter-productive.
