authority is always better than anarchy - and no authoritarian is going to stop me from being a naughty boy!

I am an anarchist in my personal life ... but I don't feel we have evolved far enough as a species to make anarchy work in society itself. We still need government to transfer the wealth from those who have too much to those who have too little, to make sure important projects get done, and keep territorial humans from screwing over and killing each other.

Authoritarian has already been put in practice, we have seen its results in nazi Germany, communist USSR, China or North Korea. Anarchist hasn't. So, in order to be able to make a fair comparison, we should see first how an anarchist society works.

I'd say Fallout. Not a perfect example since it's post-apocalypse and fictional, but I still think it's a good one. You've got the towns of people who've decided to band together, the loners who just wander the wastes (your character included), and the savages who take what they please through force and intimidation. No laws except what the people themselves set, and no real government.

Fallout is a free roam video game. As far as mediating institutions...not really. There are leaders sometimes, but they're usually just like a sheriff or something rather than a president. The one guy who tried to become president got blown up. So yeah. And no, the raiders don't always win, though they're still feared.
