Societies that value the old over the young are tranditional societies. In those societies, people expect to do what their parents and grandparents did, so they value the old.
Societies that value the young over the old are technological societies; young people always know more and are better adapted to new technologies. In this type of society, to be old is to be useless.
They both have their good and bad points. It is probably easier for most people to grow up in a traditional society because there is much more emotional support. But a technological society has more freedom for the individual.
