I would have told her on the phone that "before she hangs up she better consider which is more important to her, being a good host, or being employed."

yes, because "company coming in today" is not a good enough reason. instead of requesting off like a normal person would she called off--shows she doesn't think her job's important.

I'd say have a nice day off no need to come back, well only to pick up your last check.

I'm with you- she needs to go. There are too many good people out there who would appreciate having a job during this pissy economy. Company? Sheeesh!

Yeah. I do construction, and if I employed someone, and they couldn't be there a reasonable amount of the time, I'd kick them to the curb. I'm not a workaholic either.

Yes you are in the right, if they are costing the company money and you are at your wits end. Their company would have understood that they had to work.

Ive fired someone for something similar to that. If they dont want to work then I dont want them "working" for me

I would get over my jealousy, admit that I wished I was the one that had company coming over and move on with my busy little life.

I am the boss at my work and I would totally fire my employee for doing that. Then again, we are all such a close knit group of worker bees here that all they would have to do is ask someone to cover the shift before hand.

Boot her! What a nerve, with all the people out of work and struggling. If she doesn't want the job, there are much more deserving people out there.

I used to work in a pub where one girl called in all the time with excuses like "I'm too spotty today", "I have my period", "I stubbed my toe and it's a bit sore". She got away with it for months!

Send her packing!!! There are many people out there who'd love to have that job and who'd show up daily, on time. (Don't feel bad...I've had worse employees than that.)

I would think the company was more important to this employee than the job.

Yes, she is showing her self to be someone you can't rely on, and to take the day off because of company coming is totally unacceptable, find someone you can count on I'm sure there are hundreds of them out there.

Yes, some good answers here! Its her call, you can just give her the choice of honouring her commitment to her employer or her social life. Best of luck with that call!
