Resolved Question

If your best friend owed you money, and they knew you needed it for rent, but didn't pay you, what do you do?

My best friend knew the $230 he borrowed was my rent money, and he promised on his eyes that he would pay me May 1st. Then when the time came, he ignored my calls, avoided me, then lies and says he thought he could pay me June 1st. Did that friend ever have any respect for me as a person?

"Neither a lender nor a borrower be" is good advice if you can manage to carry it off! Money transactions between friends or family are one almost sure way to cause trouble - unless you are rolling in the stuff....

I would actually never loan my rent money, as here, one default and you can be turfed out. It would simply be a case of "Sorry, I'm not in a position to lend". But what you can do now... Well if he won't communicate, I would think that's it - he's soiled his nest, and you have learned a hard lesson. Hope you can get by the circumstance somehow! Best wishes!

I have been in this situation a few times. They werent "best" friends, but friends none the less. I will help anyone in need and they took complete advantage of it. Nothing major thank heavens, but enough to let me find out who they really are. Basically I confronted them with repaying me (or giving back to me what they borowed), and I got excuse after excuse. I realized that they had no intention of returning to me what what mine (one even lent out to others what I had lent out to him and I never saw it again). I would finally give them an ultimatum....either return it or we're not friends anymore. We were not friends anymore. I have gotten to where I am very reluctant to lend anything to anyone. The worst part was if I ever need their help, or just wanted to hang out....they were never available. Its amazing how many people willtake advantage of you...even one you never thought would. Its even more amazing how if they "burned" you before, will try to make you feel guilty for not helping again or get mad because you wont.

NEVER lend him money again. And never lend anyone the money you need to live on. You need to take care of yourself & your family first and there are a hundred reasons why people borrow money and a million why they can't pay it back.

Just my opinion, but can you really refer to this person as your "best friend", after they stuck you like this? I know I wouldn't be able to!

Hi sinnamon76
I would reconsider their status as best friend. However he is your best friend and only you know the boundaries of your relationship. If close ask him to explain. Best friends share everything. If you really love him beat him up some. That should do it and you can still be friends after! I hope you don't let money win over friendship though!

He promised on his eye? well, then they're yours now.
Sit back and start thinking about what you can do with a pair of extra eyes.
Are your in good condition? do you like his eycolour better? Retinal transplant!
Or maybe just as novelty rear-view mirror ornaments?
Or you can be more symbolic.
Is there anyone you need surveiled/stalked? Are you blind? Do you know any blind people who need a guide? Let him earn your money back.

Your friendship isn't worth ruining over money. So your friend is showing you a major character flaw right now...we all have them. Get your money on June 1st and learn your lesson that money and friendship don't mix.

That was no best friend, by the sound of it...

I'd forget about the money....and forget about the friend....you were used....and then he's going to lie to you, on top of it.....Forget him....if he starts calling you, ignore the calls.....If he really intends to pay you back on June 1st (doubt it), he knows your address to drop it by or mail it to you......

A costly lesson.....but a valuable on.....Learn from it, and take care of yourself.

Move on and find another way to pay rent. Never "loan" money to anyone. Always consider it a gift that you will never get back--that way, you don't give away what you can't afford to lose.

Money and friendships/family don't mix.

My mother used to say that "bought experience is the best experience." I never knew what that meant...but I learned the hard way. And my dad used to say...never lend anyone money, especially a friend because if they can't pay it back, it can ruin a good friendship...but if you have extra just give it to them and if they pay it back good and if they don't, well you won't get your feelings hurt. Good luck to you.
