Im 23 and i've had a UTI (I think) constantly for 6weeks now! What can I do?

I've had kidney and bladder scan and they are both clear. There is no blood in my urine. It stings and burns when i urinate and when im just sat about. Its here constantly. I also feel constantly sick. Im not pregnant. I was given 3 different courses of antibiotic by my GP which didnt clear it. Iwas then hospitalized for 5days on an IV antibiotic. They told me I had E.coli in my water but then after 5days told me there was no longer an infection and sent me home. I was back at AnE this weekend but they wouldnt re-admit me. The doc gave me a 5 course of daycourse of ciprofloxacin but that doesnt seem to be working either. Ive been drinking lots of water and cranberry juice. I have an appointment to see a Urologist but that could take up to 8 weeks. I go on holiday in 3 weeks time. But i feel there is no cure. Im getting really depressed with it. With myself being so young I feel it is ruining my life. Will it ever go!?

Just a few thoughts....(care of Wikipedia)

UTIs are most common in sexually active women and increase in diabetics and people with sickle-cell disease or anatomical malformations of the urinary tract.

Since bacteria can enter the urinary tract through the urethra (an ascending infection), poor toilet habits can predispose to infection, but other factors (pregnancy in women, prostate enlargement in men) are also important and in many cases the initiating event is unclear.

Allergies can be a hidden factor in urinary tract infections. For example, allergies to foods can irritate the bladder wall and increase susceptibility to urinary tract infections. Urinary tract infections after sexual intercourse can be also be due to an allergy to latex condoms, spermicides, or oral contraceptives. In this case review alternative methods of birth control with your doctor.

A common cause of UTI is an increase in sexual activity, such as vigorous sexual intercourse with a new partner, although the reason behind this is unclear. The term "honeymoon cystitis" has been applied to this phenomenon.

Women are more prone to UTIs than men because in females, the urethra is much shorter and closer to the anus than in males.

Patients with recurrent UTIs may need further investigation. This may include ultrasound scans of the kidneys and bladder or intravenous urography (X-rays of the urological system following intravenous injection of iodinated contrast material). If there is no response to treatment, interstitial cystitis may be a possibility.

You need SERIOUS medical attention. The infection could spread through your body. Go to another Doctor. Do not go on vacation until you are well.

AIUI provides you with a lot of information.

I just wanted to add a couple of things...

1) After intercouse it is extremely important for you to urinate afterwards to flush any bacteria out to avoid a UTI.
2) Never allow your partner to enter the rear and than the front without a thorough cleaning - fingers, genitalia, or whatever else you could be experimenting with.
3) Do not wait too long to urinate (even during treatment). The bladder is a muscle that stretches to hold urine and contracts when the urine is released. Waiting very long past the time you first feel the need to urinate causes the bladder to stretch beyond its capacity which over time can weaken the bladder muscle which increases the risk of urinary tract infection or bladder infection; so when you have to go -- goooo.
4) A UTI can be caused by something more serious which is why it is not clearing up (Sexually Transmitted Infection, Sexually Transmitted Disease, Diabetes, etc...)

If this has been going on as long as you have said than you should look for another doctor for another opinion. If there is nothing they can do until the 8 weeks waiting time to see the specialist, than they can prescribe you with a pill (forget what it's called but it turns your urine orange) -- that pill relieves you from the itching, burning, painful sensations that you are experiencing.

Hope you feel better and can enjoy your vacation!

8 weeks will can seem like an eternity.
Go to your GP and request another Urologist they won't all have long waiting lists. or go to another GP
Dont be brave about it, cry out in pain and collapse on the floor if you have to to empahsize severity (dont be above a little drama to speed up the process)
Present again at AnE for admission you should be able to see a Urologist within a day or 2 if youve been admitted ... dont be passive about your treatment ask very clearly for what you want.

I get frequent UTI's if you've been drinking lots (and I mean LOTS) of water already, I dont know what else you can do.. Usually I just have to drink a ton of water and it'll go away in a day or two... I feel your pain though..

Find a urologist who does not have an 8-week wait. Call the one you found...tell them you MUST SEE him/her in the next 3 weeks because you will be out of town and potentially subject to becoming worse. They can't tell you that he/she doesn't have 15 minutes between now and 3 weeks from now to see a patient who is in pain...they DID take the Hippocratic Oath, yanno. Tell 'em it's time to keep that oath...sometime within the next 3 weeks.

Be polite but be firm...you have to know how to handle people sometimes. Pitch the pain and LONG TERM nature of the issue...and the fact that you will be out of touch while on holiday. Someone will show compassion...if not at that office, then at the next one.
