It's a hyper state of brain activity that can be chemically or anxiety driven. The best way to clear it up is with exercise but sometimes it takes drugs if it gets too severe.

You will need to use drugs then and to deal with the high anxiety.

If you use a computer late at night I think it makes it hard to go to sleep. I don't know if it's true, but I read there's a kind of light used with the computer screen which tells our brain to wake up.
I like Valerian, which is a safe herb to use. I like the one from Shaklee Company, because the company does a lot to make sure their products are without pesticides or other things I don't want, i.e., pure.
Have you used breathing techniques? I'm sure you can find this info online. I find the breathing techniques very helpful. It requires that you concentrate on your breathing, and that's part of what helps and allows you to relax. Another helper is the progressive muscle relaxation exercise. You should be able to find all this online.

Thanks for all that advice. I have got some valerian but only use it sparingly. I don't suffer insomnia that often, it's just when I do it's damned annoying. I'm going to the gym this morning so that should help. And yes, I know all about breathing techniques. Thanks. :-)

I just chewed up some valium myself. I wonder what it's like to keep regular hours.

Insomnia is bloody horrible, especially when you have to get up in the morning and go to work. I've read up about it and all these things about taking a drink before bedtime, making sure the room's dark etc are largely useless.
I made the decision, a long time ago, never to go on the addictive pills. When I've gone a few nights and I can't stand it any longer, I'll take an antihistamine tablet, which usually works.
Also, I try not to think about it too much, because it only makes the problem worse, (as you've probably already found out).
It amazes me that in these enlightened times, that there still isn't a proper cure for this problem. But, at least we can content ourselves with the fact that we're in good company. A lot of very prominent people have, or have had, the same problem.

Goodness, what a thorough and thoughtful answer. Thank you. I do suffer from hayfever so maybe that's got something to do with it. I actually have been taking antihistamines lately because of the hayfever. Oh well, we'll see. :-)
