At 13 boys start getting into those instruments.
Best thing for a parent to do is teach him how to play it. And teach him to always be safe. If someone else used the sax before it might have germs on it.

I stated at 12 and been playing for 37 years now.....get him into some lessons and expose him to some good jazz/big band and various other forms of music. I think if he enjoys it and takes to it.......hey....could be his nitch in life.....plus its fun...and ive met some pretty famous and cool people along the way

I started at 13; 7th grade. Baritone sax. This is the perfect time to introduce any young person to a band instrument.
