Coincidence is exactly what it says - two or more incidents which are connected, sometimes by happening simultaneously, or to the same person, etc.
Whether it "means something" or not depends on that connection.

Did the guy who was hit by lightning four times before he was 25 have something in his blood that drew electricity? or was he too fond of standing in fields during thunderstorms?

Did you think of a friend from a decade ago two days before they call you because they were thinking of you? or was it a random but not statistically improbable syncing of events? Or did they call you because you thought of them, or because they bugged your house, or secretly sneak in and read your diary when you're not home?

Sometimes the connection is unknown, unobservable, unknowable, mysterious, esoteric, etc. etc. and so on. This is when other means of knowing may come into play, depending on your own beliefs about how to draw conclusions, and how to influence the world. Read: entheogens, self-help programs, psychology, magick, willfull ignorance, jumping to conclusions, dogmatic scholarship, etc. etc. ad nauseum.

We will never know if it means anything, we will all just go through life hoping there's more to it than this

It always means something, but just never the ridiculous fantasies that people come up with.
